CITY OF ANGELS!

Neither of us (nor Nash, to our knowledge) have ever been to California and we were very excited to get on I-40 and make our way to the Golden State.

As we were traveling out of beloved Arizona we decided to take one of the "Historic Route 66" detours - it added time to the drive but it was well worth it!  This chunk of old 66 wound through mountains with extremely sharp turns and 10 MPH speed limits.  The scenery was breath taking.

We also got trapped (literally) in a tourist trap -- one small little "town", Oatman, that doesn't seem to be much more than a lot of free roaming donkeys and some "Wild West" buildings along Route 66 stops traffic to have a fake gunfight and then a little girl dressed like a cowgirl asks for money.   Surprisingly, we didn't tip them for making us wait twenty minutes in a line of traffic but we did get yelled at for taking this photo of the mess.  An old man in a cowboy costume feeding carrots to a donkey yelled "NO DRIVE BY SHOOTINGS!"

Anyway - I would recommend the drive on 66, it gorgeous, but I will also tell you that as you are trapped in Oatman you will curse your decision.

I digress,  our first stop in CA was Los Angeles.
Our friends Matt & Jay moved out there in October and I had been looking forward to visiting them, seeing their new place and exploring LA with them our whole road trip! It was so great.

We used the timer to take a picture of all of us - for the first we wanted to be "SUPER excited!" and for the second the plan was to be bored, however, the clicking count down of the timer caught the interest of nash, hilarity ensued.

We really enjoyed LA, the neighborhood we stayed in (Los Feliz) was so pretty - we took a lot of pictures of all the tropical and succulent plants.

Our first day in LA we went over to Pasedena and toured the Gamble House (a Greene and Greene Craftman home) - well worth the $10 tour - it is gorgeous.   That night we saw our good friend Michael Wells in Lost Moon Radio.  I highly recommend people check this show out: it's a super funny, really well done, high concept sketch comedy-musical variety show.   It was really great to see Mikey and to be able to spend time catching up with him.

Sean went to San Diego over the weekend and Jay had to work due to health care reform so on the weekend Mateo and I went up to Ojai and Santa Barbara.  What a wonderful day: when one of your closest friends moves across the country it's nice to have a whole day driving around, catching up, hiking, laughing, etc.   We took a lot of photos that day but the camera somehow got set on a weird setting so all of the photos look like we in the rapture/a nuclear holocaust.   See:

Nash being raptured.

There were some car troubles and we were a bit stranded for a couple of days but we still got to do and see a lot!
I had drinks with my cousin Alex who lives out there now,  we went to the Getty Museum, we hiked around Griffith Park, drove out to Venice Beach in Matt & Jay's convertible (top down, of course), ate yummy fish tacos - basically had a wonderful time in the warm southern california sunshine!

check out more LA photos here and here!
